Signage

For many of us, the signs we display on our premises reflect the corporate look of our business but there is much more to a good sign than its looks!

When considering signage for your building, remember the following:

  • signs need to be simple, short and easily understood
  • signs also need to be consistent
  • use a mix of upper and lower case lettering
  • use a sans serif font like Arial
  • contrast the text colour with the sign background colour
  • contrast the sign with its surroundings
  • use matt surfaces for signs – avoid surfaces that cause reflective glare
  • use appropriate font sizes for different types of signs
  • place signs in logical positions at appropriate heights
  • use symbols as well as words
  • use tactile signs appropriately

WHY IS HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING IMPORTANT?
£30BN lost each year to the economy due to the failure of employers providing adequate health and safety training

Health and Safety training at all levels is important to ensure that all employees are competent to carry out their tasks in a safe manner.

The Health and Safety Executive have published several leaflets that explain the importance of health and safety training to owners and managers of businesses. It gives advice on who may need training, what form the training may take and how to organise it.

Health and safety law says:
• employees must be trained and clearly instructed in their duties;
• employers and host companies must ensure contractors are properly trained to work safely.
