Approaches

A good starting point for an access audit – consider how your clients/customers get to your service point in the first place.

Are your services, for example:

  • within easy walking distance of a public highway, car parking or public transport?
  • are routes from the above free of kerbs?
  • are routes level or are there ramps and/or steps to negotiate?
  • are routes wide enough to accommodate wheelchair and pedestrian traffic comfortably?
  • are route surfaces firm and slip-resistant?
  • are routes clearly defined?
  • are routes that cross vehicular routes identified through the use of tactile paving?
  • are routes adequately lit?
  • are routes free from obstruction for example by street furniture, shrubs and trees?
  • are there any windows or doors that open onto walkways?

This list is not exhaustive but does represent a good starting point if you are considering your own services and the degree of accessibility of them.

WHY IS HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING IMPORTANT?
£30BN lost each year to the economy due to the failure of employers providing adequate health and safety training

Health and Safety training at all levels is important to ensure that all employees are competent to carry out their tasks in a safe manner.

The Health and Safety Executive have published several leaflets that explain the importance of health and safety training to owners and managers of businesses. It gives advice on who may need training, what form the training may take and how to organise it.

Health and safety law says:
• employees must be trained and clearly instructed in their duties;
• employers and host companies must ensure contractors are properly trained to work safely.
