To Young to Die

Monday 6 July 2009 9:35 AM
Too Young to Die is a study recently conducted by the TUC in conjunction with Hazards magazine which has found that nearly 4,500 young people between the ages of 16-24 are seriously injured or killed at work each year. This figure has increased by more than 20% compared to figures published five years ago. This roughly equates to one young person dying every month in an accident in the workplace or a serious injury every 40 minutes.

If you are an employer who has young staff between those ages, ask yourself if you are providing both health and safety, and workplace experience training? The study shows that employers often fail to understand that younger members of staff have less workplace and life experiences which can be factors leading to these accidents.

The Local Government Association (LGA) is backing the TUC’s “don’t make this your last summer – work-safe message”. A clear message by the LGA is “authorities are willing to take a firm stand on this issue and urge employers to conduct detailed risk assessments before a young person starts and to provide training and supervision”.

Being a firm believer in an integrated approach between health and safety and management practices Bravanark is fully behind these messages. For those business owners who need training in conducting risk assessments contact HS@bravanark.co.uk. Those employers who need help with recruitment, planning training and supervision skills for managers dealing with all ages of staff especially the young contact info@bravanark.co.uk.
